A Conversation with Bettie Mbayo, Investigative Journalist
Uncovering Liberia’s Struggles Through Journalism
What happens when journalists dedicate their lives to exposing injustice in a country rife with corruption and inequality? Meet Bettie K. Johnson Mbayo, a pioneering investigative journalist who fearlessly sheds light on Liberia’s pressing issues—gender inequality, press freedom, and systemic corruption.
In a nation shaped by a complex past and ongoing struggles, Bettie’s unwavering commitment to truth-telling underscores the essential role of independent media in fostering democracy and accountability.
Liberia’s Complex History: A Backdrop of Challenges
Liberia’s origins in the early 1800s are deeply tied to US slavery politics, as freed African Americans established the nation. Yet, its journey has been far from smooth. The scars of two civil wars in the 1990s and entanglement in regional conflicts linger, despite two decades of relative peace.
While Liberia has made strides, including the peaceful transfer of power in 2017, it faces entrenched challenges. Corruption undermines governance, gender inequality persists despite the legacy of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s presidency, and press freedom remains under constant threat.
Women’s Rights in Liberia: Progress and Barriers
Women in Liberian politics confront systemic barriers that limit their representation and leadership opportunities. Though the groundbreaking presidency of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf marked a milestone, gender disparities remain stark:
- Women hold disproportionately fewer seats in the national legislature.
- Gender provisions in electoral laws are non-binding, offering little enforcement for equitable representation.
- The current First Past the Post voting system disadvantages women candidates.
Compounding these challenges, women in politics face heightened risks of violence during elections, making the political arena even less accessible.
Corruption and Press Freedom: A Perilous Landscape
Corruption remains pervasive in Liberia, weakening anti-corruption institutions and limiting their capacity to enact meaningful change. Though enshrined in Liberia’s constitution, press freedom is often curtailed by political meddling and threats against journalists.
Bettie describes the media landscape:
“In our country, the problem of media sustainability and ownership stands out as a significant failure. Journalists frequently encounter pressure to align their reporting with directives, often prioritizing the interests of political parties or specific leaders’ economic agendas.”
Politicians exploit laws to control media companies, appointing allies to oversee content and consolidating their influence. State-owned media and community radio stations face similar interference, stifling independent journalism.
Bettie Mbayo: A Voice for Truth
Bettie’s passion for journalism began in high school, where she founded the first press club. Despite initial plans to pursue medicine, she was drawn to investigative reporting, working her way up at FrontPage Africa, Liberia’s leading newspaper.
Bettie has tackled sensitive topics, from gender-based violence to high-profile corruption cases. In one investigation, she traveled 16 hours on treacherous roads to verify a rape allegation against a lawmaker, enduring threats and personal risks.
Her resilience led to the founding of The Stage Media, a fact-checking organization that combats misinformation while amplifying survivors’ voices and holding power to account. Bettie envisions a Liberia where:
- Journalists work free from harassment.
- Media independence is safeguarded.
- Investigative reporting thrives, fostering transparency and accountability.
Why Bettie’s Fight Matters Globally
Bettie emphasizes that Liberia’s struggles are emblematic of broader issues journalists and women face worldwide. The erosion of press freedom and persistent gender inequality in Liberia serves as a reminder of the fragility of these rights globally.
“My mission is to defend media institutions and foster impartial journalism,” Bettie asserts. “It’s about upholding the rights of the audience and ensuring accountability.”
